Constellations work with videogame giant

In just eight months, one of the UK’s leading videogame developers Sumo Digital has undergone a total transformation at their headquarters in Sheffield with the development of a specialist audio studio.

The high-spec spaces include a Dolby Atmos capable mixing suite, three edit studios, a Foley live room, and new open-plan office spaces.

The work was carried out by Constellations, who won the contract following their recommendation by White Mark Ltd; acoustic and technical designers for clients including Abbey Road and Damon Albarn, amongst others.

Facilities like the Dolby Atmos studio are key for the production of exciting state-of-the-art sound techniques for games, including the ability to create sound for 3D spaces. This, along with the other newly installed facilities, come at an exciting time for Sumo, allowing them to continue as trailblazers within the games industry.

The new spaces have been praised by Sumo for offering a high-quality solution to a problem the studio has faced. With audio facilities across four of its UK sites, an ever-increasing workload that taxed these facilities, the directors of the studio felt it was time to invest in a world-class facility to take them to the next level.

Audio Director for Sumo Digital, Pat Phelan, commented:

No detail was too small, as they understood right from the start the level of quality and precision we required to help us take the production quality of our craft to the next level”

“As most of our games can be played back on a variety of systems, we usually create switchable (in-game) mixes for stereo, headphones, 5.1, 7.1 and Atmos. The new studios have gone beyond our expectations – the outstanding build quality of the facilities, coupled with the cutting-edge hardware, have really come together and given us a studio space that empowers our audio team and allows us to make the very best products we can.”
